A simple way of giving the file folders some color is by adding a wallpaper background. This background could also help you to easily identify and distinguish folder windows specially if you have backup folders on a detachable or network drive with titles matching the originals found on your hard drive. To add texts to your background choose the command Start-Programs-Accessories-Paint. Generate/insert an image with a size almost the same as the file pane; uncheck Image-Draw Opaque and use the Paint’s text tool to write your note on the picture. Save the image as a bitmap, GIF or Jpeg file. To apply it to a folder select View-Customize This Folder then click Next and Browse to choose the image from your hard drive.

You can configure separate wallpaper backgrounds for multiple monitors without an additional utility. Here are a few easy steps to follow:
Right-click Desktop, select Properties, click Display properties. Choose Desktop tab, click Customize desktop for the desktop items dialog box.
Select Web tab and click New button to open New desktop item display box.
To load and select image file, click the Browse button.
Choose image file, click Ok thrice to close dialog boxes and place image on desktop.
Point your mouse over the picture, as the Title bar appears, click and drag the picture to the monitor you’ve selected, then maximize the picture.
Right-click Desktop then choose arrange icons and click Lock web items on desktop.

Microsoft has released DeskScapes 2.0, a desktop-display feature allowing users to make use of a looped, full-motion video for their desktop wallpaper. Previously, wallpapers were only made up of static images and used to serve only as background for your windows display. These animated wallpapers do not use much CPU resources and their performance can be configured based on the systems requirement. Users can set these wallpapers to change based on the time of day and can be done independent from one another. The clients’ response to using these animated wallpapers will depend largely on the quality of the product.

Many internet sites offer different sets of wallpaper backgrounds either for free or for copyrighted use. One such site has a compilation of photos that show images viewed under a microscope which was converted to bitmaps using a black and white background. Some of their collections include:
Bio-chemicals – the shots are made up of amino acids, sugars, proteins, hormones, vitamins, etc.
Food and Beverages – photos of the ingredients used in the manufacturing of soft drinks, ice cream, flavors often used in foods we eat.
Gemstones and Rocks – this include photos of moon rocks, meteorites, gold, diamonds, silver, and other birthstones.
These photos can be centered or tiled on your desktop.

More recently, desktops, notebooks even mobile phones use wallpaper backgrounds. We have as many pictures from the net that can be downloaded for free and it is also possible to use your own photo collection as your wallpaper. A saved jpeg, bmp or tiff picture file for wallpaper can be presented in a stretched, tiled or centered position. Stretching the position covers the entire desktop; while tiling it presents the picture in a mosaic form; and centering will place it in the middle of your desktop. Your pictures are stored in folders in your hard drive and are easily accessible.
